A Prayer for Today: Trusting God With What You Can’t Control

Most of us do not think of ourselves as controlling. We think of ourselves as responsible. We plan because somebody has to, we think three steps ahead because that is what sensible people do, and we call the whole exercise being prepared. It only shows itself for what it is when the plan breaks and we cannot let it go.

This prayer meets that moment. Not the dramatic crisis, but the ordinary Sunday when you realise you have spent the week trying to arrange an outcome that was never yours to arrange, and you are tired in a way that sleep does not touch.

Father, I have been trying to run something that belongs to You.

I have made the plan, revised the plan, and lain awake improving the plan. I have rehearsed conversations that have not happened and prepared answers for questions nobody has asked me yet.

You know why I do it. If I can see far enough ahead, I will not be caught out. If I can arrange it all carefully enough, nothing will hurt. It has never once worked, and I keep going back to it.

So here is the timeline I have been guarding. I am giving it back. I do not know when this resolves, or how, or whether it goes the way I have been hoping. You do.

Here are the people I have been quietly trying to steer. I love them and I cannot choose for them. Do what only You can do in them, and keep me from mistaking my worry for wisdom.

Where my planning has actually been fear wearing a sensible coat, show me, kindly. I would rather see it now than defend it for another year.

Give me enough light for today. Not the whole road. Just the next stretch, and the willingness to walk it before I can see where it bends.

Make me useful in what is really mine. The work in front of me. The person in front of me. The thing I have been avoiding because I cannot guarantee how it will go.

And when I catch myself reaching for the controls again, and I will, let it turn me back to prayer rather than a reason to despair.

Thank You that the outcome was always safer in Your hands than in mine, even in the years I would not have admitted it.

Amen.

A Scripture to Pray Alongside This

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5 and 6 (ESV)

The instruction is not to stop understanding. It is to stop leaning, which is a different thing entirely. You can think hard, plan carefully and still refuse to put your whole weight on a conclusion you reached at midnight while anxious.

And the promise is about paths rather than outcomes. He does not undertake to tell you the ending in advance. He undertakes to make the way ahead walkable, one straightened stretch at a time, for people who keep bringing Him in.

How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day

Try dividing your worries into two lists this morning, one of things you can act on today and one of things you cannot. Do something on the first list before lunch. Say the second list out loud to God once, and then leave it alone. The point is not to stop caring, it is to stop pretending the second list is actionable.

Watch for the rehearsal habit in particular. If you notice yourself scripting a conversation that has not happened, stop and name it. That habit feels like preparation, but it is mostly a way of trying to control another person’s side of a dialogue, which has never yet worked.

Then let evening be a real end. Whatever is unresolved at nine will still be unresolved at eleven, and you will only have paid for the extra two hours in sleep. Handing the day back is not laziness. It is an act of trust that you can practise nightly until it starts to feel normal, and it is close to what Jesus means in Matthew 6:34 when He tells us not to borrow tomorrow’s trouble tonight.

Short Prayers for the Places Planning Runs Out

Before a decision you cannot un-make: Lord, I have weighed this as well as I can. Where my thinking is short, be long. Amen.

When the timeline slips again: Father, I wanted this settled by now. Teach me to wait without souring, and hold what I cannot hurry. Amen.

When you are managing something that is not yours: God, take my hands off this. Give me something better to do with them today. Amen.

When you have to hand work to somebody else: Lord, I am letting go of how this gets done. Help me trust the person in front of me and give them room. Amen.

A Question to Sit With Today

If you knew that the thing you are trying to control would turn out well without your management, what would you do with the energy you got back?
