A Prayer for Today: While I Wait

Father, I am still waiting.

You know the thing I mean. The one I have brought to You so many times I stopped counting. It has not moved. Or if it has moved, I cannot see it from where I am standing.

I want to be honest with You this morning. Some days the waiting feels like faith. Most days it just feels like nothing happening, and I go to bed with the same weight I woke up with.

Lord, I don’t want to pretend I am fine. I am tired of holding this open-handed. My fingers keep closing around it. Help me open them again.

Teach me what to do with the time in between. Not just how to survive it. How to live inside it without going numb, without turning bitter, without quietly deciding You have forgotten my name.

Father, when the silence gets loud, remind me that silence is not absence. You were working in Joseph’s prison. You were working through Hannah’s empty years. You were working the whole time, and nobody in the room could see it.

So I am asking again, plainly. Move in this. Do the thing only You can do.

And if the answer today is still wait, then give me enough strength for today. Just today. I am not asking for a year of patience. I am asking for this Sunday.

Keep my heart soft. Keep my hope from curdling into cynicism. Keep me showing up.

Let me notice what You are already doing while I stare at what You haven’t done yet. There is grace in this house I have walked straight past. Open my eyes to it.

Lord, I trust You. I say it with a shaky voice. I say it anyway.

Amen.

A Scripture to Pray Alongside This

“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.” (Lamentations 3:25)

You can read it in context on Bible Gateway. Jeremiah wrote this in the ruins of a city that had already fallen. He is not describing waiting that ends quickly or waiting that comes with an explanation. He is describing waiting that happens after the worst has already occurred, and he still calls God good inside it.

The waiting he commends is active. The soul seeks. That is the difference between waiting on God and simply enduring time passing.

How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day

Give the waiting a shape. Decide what you will do while you wait, whether that is the work in front of you, the people who need you, or the discipline you have been avoiding. Undefined waiting turns into anxious watching, and anxious watching will take your whole day.

Guard against the story your mind tells in the silence. Delay is not the same as denial, and a closed door is not the same as God’s disinterest. Romans 8:25 ties hope to patience deliberately, because the two grow together or not at all.

Keep asking. Waiting on God does not mean going quiet with Him. Bring the same request again today, without embarrassment. Persistent prayer is commended in scripture, never rebuked.

Refuse the comparison that waiting invites. Someone else’s timeline is not evidence about yours, and scripture is full of people whose delay was preparation rather than punishment. Joseph waited years in a prison for a promise given in a dream, and none of those years were wasted.

Keep your commitments while you wait. Show up where you said you would, do the work in front of you well, and stay in fellowship. Waiting is not a season to withdraw from ordinary faithfulness, and the habits you keep now are the ones that will carry the answer when it arrives.

Short Prayers for the Waiting

At the start of the day: Father, I choose to seek You in this waiting rather than only watching the clock, and I trust Your timing over my own, in Jesus’ name.

When the delay feels personal: I reject every lie that says God has forgotten me, and I declare that His goodness toward me has not changed, in the name of Jesus.

When you are tempted to force it: Lord, restrain me from every door You have not opened, and keep me from settling for less than what You have promised, in Jesus’ name.

When someone else receives what you are waiting for: Father, cleanse my heart of envy, let me rejoice honestly with them, and strengthen my confidence in my own season, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Before you sleep: Lord, I place this waiting in Your hands again tonight, I thank You that You are working where I cannot see, and I rest in Your goodness, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Question to Sit With Today

What have you stopped doing because you are waiting for something to change, and is that pause actually obedience or is it avoidance?

Sit with today’s scripture next: Verse for Today, Psalm 27:14.
