A Prayer for Today: When You Are Carrying Someone Else and No One Is Carrying You

You checked your phone again at 6:40 this morning, before your feet even touched the floor. Nothing new. And you already know how today is going to feel, because you are the one holding this thing for everybody else, and nobody has thought to ask who is holding you.

So before the coffee, before the first message you have to answer in a calm voice you do not feel, pray this out loud. Slowly. You are allowed to set some of the weight down.

Father, I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix. I have been carrying someone I love, and I have been carrying them quietly, and this morning the weight of it is sitting right on my chest. I am bringing it to You before I bring it anywhere else.

Lord, You know their name. I do not have to explain the situation to You or build the case or find better words. You already know the part I have never said out loud to anyone. You know what I was checking my phone for. You know what I am afraid the answer is going to be.

So I am asking plainly. Move in their life. Do what I cannot do. I have talked and advised and stayed up late and rearranged my own days around theirs, and I have run out of ideas. You have not run out of anything. Go where I cannot follow them. Speak where they will not let me speak.

Father, keep me from confusing love with control. Every time I try to fix what only You can heal, I end up empty and they end up further away. Teach me the difference between helping and hovering. Show me what is mine to do today and what is not mine at all. Give me the grace to open my hands when everything in me wants to grip tighter.

Guard my heart from resentment. I have already caught it in me, a small bitter thought about how much I give and how little comes back. I do not want to become someone who serves with a scorecard running in the background. Wash that out of me before it hardens. Let me love without keeping the receipt.

Lord, I confess I have been praying like everything depends on how well I pray. Like if I find the right words, or stay on my knees long enough, You will finally agree to move. Free me from that. You are not a lock I am trying to pick. You are a Father who already leans toward His children before they finish the sentence.

Strengthen me for the ordinary part of this. Not the dramatic part. The phone calls. The appointments in waiting rooms with bad lighting. The same conversation for the fortieth time, where I say the same thing and nothing lands. The long stretch of days when nothing visibly changes and I still have to show up kind. Give me stamina that is not performance.

Send me help, Father. I am not too proud to ask anymore. Put someone in my week who actually notices. Give me one person I can tell the truth to, the whole truth, not the edited version I give at church. I have been the strong one so long that I forgot I am allowed to need anything.

Take care of the things I have been neglecting while I carry this. My own body. My own rest. The people in my house who only get whatever is left over once the day is done. Lord, do not let me save someone else and lose my own family in the process. Restore what my worry has been quietly costing me.

Father, if there is something I have been avoiding, show me. If there is a hard conversation I keep postponing because I am afraid of how it will go, give me the courage and the timing and the tone. Do not let me call cowardice patience. Do not let me call anxiety concern.

And when the news finally comes, whatever it is, meet me in it. If it is good, keep me humble and grateful and quick to say thank You out loud instead of quietly moving on to the next worry. If it is hard, do not let me fall apart alone. Sit down in the room with me. Hold the parts of me that will want to quit.

Lord, I release them to You now. Not because I have stopped caring, but because You care more than I am able to. Not because I am walking away, but because I am finally admitting I was never the one holding them up in the first place. You were. You are. You will be there tonight when I am asleep and useless.

Do something today that only You could have done. Something small enough that I might miss it if I am not paying attention, and clear enough that I will know it was You and not a coincidence. Let me catch one glimpse of You working, and let that be enough to carry me to tomorrow.

Quiet my mind tonight. When my head hits the pillow and the worry starts its usual lap around my brain, meet me there. Interrupt it. Let me fall asleep believing that You do not sleep, and that nothing will happen in the dark that catches You off guard.

Thank You for hearing this even though I stumbled through it. Thank You that You are not put off by my tiredness, or my doubt, or the fact that I have prayed this same prayer so many times I have it memorized. Thank You that You have never once said I was too much.

I trust You with them. I am learning to trust You with me. Amen.

If your hands feel full today, you are not the only one. There are more prayers here for caregivers running on empty, and for the seasons when you find yourself ready to give up. Come back tomorrow and pray again. That is not weakness. That is how this works.
