Here is the truth: when someone you love is sick, you mostly feel useless. You can’t take the diagnosis away. You can’t sit in the chemo chair for them. You can’t answer the late-night phone call with anything that actually helps.

When you first hear the news

1. God… they’re sick. I just found out. I don’t know what to ask for yet. I just need You to know I know. Please be with them right now. Wherever they are sitting. Whatever they’re feeling. Be there. Amen.
2. Jesus, You are the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The same Jesus who healed every kind of sickness in the gospels is still that Jesus. I bring my friend to You today the way the four guys lowered their friend through the roof. I’m the friend dragging them in front of You. Heal them, Lord. Please. Amen.
3. Father, I can’t fix this. I want to fix this so badly. I keep googling things at 2 AM that aren’t going to help. Take this need-to-fix out of me and replace it with steady hands and a calm presence. Help me be useful to them, not anxious at them. Amen.
4. Lord, give the doctors wisdom. Sharp eyes. Right diagnoses. Treatment plans that work. Don’t let anything important be missed. Send the right specialist across our path at the right time. Amen.
For during the treatment
This middle part is the long part. The infusions, the surgeries, the side effects, the days my friend can’t get off the couch. Pray these slowly.
5. Father, today is treatment day for my friend. I don’t know exactly what they’re feeling, but You do. Sit with them in that chair. Be the steady presence when the nurse can’t get the IV in. Calm their nervous system when the medication starts dripping. Take the worst of the side effects and shrink them. Amen.
6. Lord, my friend is so tired. The kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix. The kind of tired that being sick on top of normal life creates. Refill what is empty in them. Strengthen their bones. Steady their heart. Renew them as You renewed Elijah under the broom tree, with rest, with food, with Your nearness. Amen.
7. Jesus, I pray for the small humiliations of being sick. The hospital gown. The bathroom struggles. The body that won’t cooperate. Protect their dignity. Send people who treat them like a whole person, not a chart. Amen.
8. Holy Spirit, when my friend feels alone in this, and they will, even with the best support around them, be the One who is closer than a brother. Speak to them in the quiet hours. Whisper Your goodness when nothing else feels good. Amen.
9. Father, I pray over their body specifically. (Pause. Name the part of the body that is sick.) Restore that. Knit it. Bring healthy cells back into rebellion against what is attacking them. The God who designed every cell can re-pattern any cell. Re-pattern this. Amen.
When you don’t know what to text them
You open the message thread. You start a sentence. You delete it. You start another one. You delete it. The cursor blinks. Here are prayers to pray before you write the text, and a couple of texts you can borrow at the bottom.
10. Lord, give me the right words to send my friend. Not the cliché ones. Not the ones that try to fix it. The ones they actually need to hear. If today the right word is just “I’m thinking of you,” help me send that. If today the right word is silence, help me sit in that too. Amen.
11. Father, help me show up consistently and not just at the start. The first week everyone shows up. By month three, most people forget. Don’t let me be most people. Remind me on Tuesdays. Tap me on the shoulder. Amen.
12. Lord, when I see my friend and I don’t know what to say, give me the grace to just sit with them. To not fill the silence with chatter. To let them lead the conversation. To not flinch when they say something hard. Amen.

15. Jesus, I’m starting to grieve while my friend is still here. People call this anticipatory grief. I didn’t know it had a name. Hold me in it. Don’t let the grief steal what time I have left to love them well. Amen.
When healing comes

17. Lord, even in remission, there’s a kind of trauma that lingers. The fear of every twinge. The dread of the next scan. Heal that too. Restore not just the body but the nervous system that was rewired by being sick. Amen.
