A Prayer for Today: A New Month, a Fresh Start, and Permission to Begin Again

The first day of a new month carries a strange mix of hope and pressure. There is the clean-slate feeling — a chance to begin again — and right beside it, the quiet ache of everything you meant to be by now and aren’t. The goals that slipped. The timelines that fell apart somewhere in the last few months.

This is a prayer for that exact threshold: standing at the start of June with empty hands, wanting to feel different, and not sure you have it in you to start over one more time. You don’t have to manufacture a fresh start by force. You can simply bring the worn-out version of yourself to God and let Him begin the new thing.

Lord,

It’s the first day of a new month. A new week. And I’ll be honest — I wanted to come into this one feeling different.

I had plans for who I was going to be by now. Goals. Timelines. Most of them fell apart somewhere in the last few months, and I don’t know how to stop carrying the weight of that.

I’m tired, God. Not just physically, though that too, but tired somewhere deeper. Tired of the same anxious loop. Tired of trying to white-knuckle my way through days that feel too heavy for one person to hold.

So I’m coming to You at the start of this month with empty hands. I’m not going to pretend I have it figured out. I don’t.

Father, would You do what I cannot do for myself? Would You make something new out of the same old material?

I don’t need a different life handed to me. I need You to meet me in this one — in the unfinished goals, the half-kept promises, the person I actually am instead of the one I planned to become.

Take the disappointment I’ve been dragging behind me and lift it off. Let me set down the version of this year I thought I’d have, and receive the one You’re actually giving.

Teach me that a fresh start is not something I earn by finally getting it right. It’s something You give, again and again, because Your mercy doesn’t run out.

And if I forget all this by noon — if I slip back into striving and counting and measuring — be patient with me. Call me back. Remind me again that the slate is clean because You wiped it, not because I did.

Begin again in me, Lord. Today. With what little I’m bringing.

Amen.

A Scripture to Pray Alongside This

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”
Isaiah 43:18–19 (ESV)

God spoke this to people stuck rehearsing their failures, and His first instruction was to stop looking backward. The new thing was already springing up — the problem was that they could not perceive it through the fog of the old. Pray this when the last few months feel like proof you cannot change; the God who makes rivers in the desert is not finished with your year.

How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day

Name one “former thing” you keep rehearsing — a missed goal, a way you let yourself down — and consciously hand it over. You are not pretending it did not happen. You are refusing to let it write the next month for you.

Choose one small, doable next step instead of a sweeping resolution. Fresh starts collapse under the weight of grand plans. Pick the next faithful thing — one walk, one honest conversation, one page — and let that be enough for today.

When the old loop starts up again, answer it with the truth that mercy resets daily. You are not allotted a fixed number of fresh starts that you are slowly using up. Each morning is a new one, freely given — the same promise of becoming a new creation found in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Short Prayers for the Start of Something New

When you feel behind in life: Lord, I’m on Your timeline, not the one in my head. Help me trust the pace You’ve set for me.

When a goal has fallen apart: Father, take the broken plan and show me what You were building underneath it. Make me willing to begin again.

When the new month already feels heavy: God, I can only live one day of this month at a time. Give me grace for today and keep tomorrow in Your hands.

When you doubt you can change: Lord, You are the One doing the new thing, not me. Work in me what I could never work in myself.

When comparison creeps in: Father, keep my eyes on the path in front of me, not on everyone else’s. Let me run my own race with You.

A Question to Sit With Today

What is one “former thing” you are still dragging into this new month — and what would it free you to do if you finally let God carry it instead?
