A Prayer for Today: Laying Down What You Can’t Control

There is something you have been holding so tightly that your hands have started to ache. A situation with no clear answer. A person you love and cannot change. A diagnosis, a deadline, a relationship, an outcome that depends on a hundred things sitting far outside your reach. You have prayed about it before — and then picked it right back up the moment you said amen, as if leaving it with God meant nothing would get done.

Maybe today you are simply tired of carrying what was never yours to carry. The mind can only rehearse the same fear so many times before it wears a groove. This prayer is for the part of you that truly wants to trust God with the thing you cannot fix, and keeps forgetting how to actually let go of it.

Father,

I come to You with my hands full again.

You can see exactly what I am gripping — the worry I have rehearsed a hundred times, the outcome I keep trying to force into place.

I confess that I have been treating this as though it were mine to solve alone. I have been straining under a weight You never handed me, and calling it responsibility.

I am tired, Lord. Tired of planning for every version of what could go wrong, tired of lying awake trying to do Your job for You.

Forgive me for trusting my own grip more than I trust Your goodness.

So here it is. I am setting it down in front of You — slowly, clumsily, because I honestly do not know how to do this well.

Take the part I cannot control. Take the part I am most afraid to release.

Help me believe that You are awake while I finally rest, that You are moving even when I cannot see a single thing change.

I do not need to understand the whole plan today. I only need to know that You are good, and that You are already holding what I have just let go.

Teach my hands to stay open. Teach my heart to leave it here, with You.

Amen.

A Scripture to Pray Alongside This

“…casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)

Notice that the verse does not tell you to manage your anxiety, or to shrink it down to a more reasonable size, or to pretend it was never that heavy. It tells you to cast it — to throw it, with effort, onto Someone strong enough to hold it. And the reason given is almost startling in its tenderness: because he cares for you. You are not bothering God with the thing on your mind. The weight you have been carrying matters to Him for the simplest of reasons — because you matter to Him, and He has never once seen you as a burden.

How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day

When the worry comes back — and it will, probably within the hour — try not to scold yourself for it. Simply open your hands, literally if it helps, and pray one short line: “It is still Yours, Lord.” You may pray it twenty times before lunch. That is not failure, and it is not weak faith. That repetition is what trusting God looks like in real time.

Give the situation a boundary. Choose one window of the day to think and plan and act on what is actually within your power, and when that window closes, deliberately hand the rest back. Jesus was honest that each day has enough trouble of its own, so you have His permission to refuse to borrow against tomorrow’s.

Then look for one small thing you really can do today, and do it without demanding a guaranteed outcome. Make the call. Send the text. Take the rest your body is begging for. Faithfulness in the small step is yours to give; the results were always, only, His to grant.

Short Prayers for the Moments You Want to Take It Back

When you wake at 3 a.m. already rehearsing the worst case: Lord, You are awake. I am not. Hold this until morning.

When the news comes and your stomach drops: Father, this did not catch You off guard. Steady me before I spiral.

When someone asks how it is going and you feel the panic rise: Jesus, give me peace for the next sixty seconds, and then the sixty after that.

When you realize you have quietly grabbed it all back again: Here, Lord. I am setting it down one more time. Thank You for not being tired of me.

A Question to Sit With Today

What is the one thing you keep taking back from God — and what would actually change about today if you believed, all the way down, that He was strong enough and kind enough to hold it for you?

When you are ready, sit with today’s verse and let it settle the place this prayer has only just begun to loosen.
