Thursday is an odd place to run out. Monday still has momentum behind it. Friday has the finish line in view. Thursday has neither, only the accumulated weight of everything the week has already asked and a day and a half still to go.
This prayer is for the middle of a long week, when you are behind on a list you did not write and the honest answer to “how are you?” is that there is nothing in the tank. It does not ask for a whole week of strength at once. It asks for today’s portion, which is the only portion God has ever promised to hand out in advance.
Father,
It is Thursday and I am running on fumes. The week is not over and I already have nothing left. So I am coming to You before I try anything else.
I do not have a polished prayer this morning. I have a list I am behind on, a body that aches, and a mind that will not stop spinning. Take all of it. Every item, every worry, every deadline. I hand them over one at a time.
You said that those who wait on You renew their strength. Lord, I am waiting. Right here, in this chair, before the day swallows me whole.
Renew me. Not with caffeine or willpower. With You.
Forgive me for the days I carried everything alone, and for treating You as a last resort instead of a first call. Teach me to come early, before I am empty, and not only after.
Give me strength for today only. Manna for this morning, bread for this afternoon, grace for tonight. You have always fed Your people one day at a time, and I am not going to be the exception.
Slow me down enough to see what is actually mine to do. So much of this tiredness comes from carrying things You never handed me.
Guard the people around me from my short temper. When I am worn thin they feel it first. Let them get patience from me today instead.
And when tonight comes and the list is still unfinished, help me set it down anyway. The world held together before I existed. It will hold while I sleep.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Scripture to Pray Alongside This
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Jeremiah wrote that in the ruins of a burned city, which is worth remembering before the line gets flattened into something pleasant on a coffee mug. New every morning is not a promise that you will wake up feeling different. It is a promise about supply.
Mercy does not roll over. You cannot stockpile it during a good week and draw it down during a bad one. That is inconvenient if you like to plan ahead, and freeing if you are empty on a Thursday, because it means today’s portion has not been spent by the last three days.
The same pattern runs through the wilderness story, where Israel gathered manna one day at a time and whatever they hoarded spoiled by morning. God feeds people in daily portions on purpose. It keeps us coming back.
How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day
Hand things over one at a time instead of as a pile. “God, take all of it” is true, but it is hard to feel. Naming the three specific things you are behind on, out loud, one after another, does something the general version does not.
Ask what is actually yours. Midweek exhaustion is often the result of quietly absorbing responsibilities nobody assigned you. Go down the list and mark the items that belong to someone else, then decide what to do about them before Friday.
Set a hard stop tonight. Not when the work is done, because it will not be. Pick a time, and when it arrives, close the laptop and let tomorrow have tomorrow’s portion. Trusting God for daily bread includes trusting Him with what you did not finish.
Short Prayers for the Middle of a Long Week
When the list gets longer instead of shorter: Lord, I cannot finish this. Show me the one thing that actually matters today and let the rest wait. Amen.
Before answering someone while you are worn thin: Father, guard my mouth. Let this person get patience from me and not the leftover edge of my week. Amen.
In the car, between one obligation and the next: God, this is all the quiet I get today. Meet me in it. Amen.
When you stop with work unfinished: Lord, I am stopping without being done. Hold what I could not carry, and give me tomorrow’s portion tomorrow. Amen.
A Question to Sit With Today
What are you carrying this week that God never actually handed you, and what would it take to set it down before Friday?
