Father, I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix.
You know the shape of it already. The thing I carried into Monday because the weekend never took it off me. I don’t have to explain it to You. You were there when it started.
So I won’t perform this morning. I’ll just say it plainly. I need comforting. Not advice. Not a lesson I should have learned by now. Comfort.
Come close. Closer than the noise in my head. Closer than the list of things I have already failed at before nine in the morning.
Lord, I have been holding this alone because holding it alone felt stronger. It wasn’t. It was just lonelier. I am putting it down in front of You now, all of it, the part I can name and the part I cannot.
Be the God of all comfort to me today. Not eventually. Today. In the car. In the meeting. In the ten minutes when it all catches up with me and I have to keep my face steady anyway.
And where I cannot feel You, help me trust that You are still here. My feelings have been unreliable lately. You have not been.
Father, if there is someone near me carrying something similar, make me gentle with them. Let whatever You pour into me spill out onto them. I do not want to waste this.
And Lord, I keep thinking I should be further along than this. That someone else would have handled it better, or faster, or with more faith. Take that thought from me. You have never once measured me against a person I am not. You have only ever met me where I actually am, which is here, on a Monday, needing You.
Steady my hands. Slow my breathing. Remind me that I am not the one holding the world together, and that I never was.
I trust You with today. All of it. Amen.
A Scripture to Pray Alongside This
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
Read the psalm on Bible Gateway. The Hebrew for near is spatial and ordinary. It is the word you would use for someone standing beside you, not for a distant sympathy. David does not say God notices the brokenhearted. He says God draws close to them.
Nothing in the verse asks you to recover first. Being crushed is the qualification, not the disqualification.
How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day
Let the comfort come through ordinary means. God comforts through scripture and His Spirit, and He also comforts through a friend who sits with you, a meal you did not cook, and sleep you finally got. Refusing human help in the name of spiritual strength is not faith.
Say the true thing to God rather than the polite thing. The psalms are full of raw complaint addressed directly to Him, which means He is not fragile and you are not being irreverent. Prayer that hides how you actually feel comforts nobody.
Watch for the moment comfort turns outward. Isaiah 66:13 pictures God comforting the way a mother comforts, and that kind of comfort is meant to be passed on. Not today, necessarily. But it will be, and knowing that gives the pain somewhere to go.
Be patient with your body as well as your heart. Grief and sorrow are physical, and exhaustion, poor sleep and a lost appetite are ordinary parts of it rather than signs of weak faith. Eat something, rest when you can, and see a doctor if the weight does not lift.
Do not measure your progress against anyone else’s timeline. There is no schedule for this in scripture, and the people who love you cannot set one for you either.
Short Prayers for the Moments Grief Rises
When it hits without warning: Father, draw close to me now, steady my heart, and let me feel that I am not alone in this, in Jesus’ name.
When you cannot stop crying: Lord, receive these tears as prayer, hold what I cannot put into words, and heal the wound underneath them, in the name of Jesus.
When people say the wrong thing: Father, guard my heart from bitterness, help me receive love even when it arrives clumsily, and keep me from isolating myself, in Jesus’ name.
In the middle of the night: Every spirit of despair that presses in on me in the dark, be scattered by the light of Christ, and let the peace of God guard my mind, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Over the days ahead: Lord, comfort me as a mother comforts her child, restore what has been crushed in me, and in time let the comfort I receive from You flow through me to someone else, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
A Question to Sit With Today
Who has been trying to comfort you that you have been holding at arm’s length, and what would it take to let them close this week?
Sit with today’s verse too: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, the God who comforts.
