Father, I am waiting.
You know what for. The answer that hasn’t come. The message that hasn’t arrived. The phone lying face up on the table while I check it again, and again, and tell myself I’m not checking it.
I keep rehearsing it, Lord. What I said. What I should have said. The one sentence I’d take back if You let me have it back.
Quiet that in me.
I’m asking You for the thing I actually want. I won’t pretend otherwise in front of You. I want the yes. I want the door to open. You already know it, so I may as well say it out loud instead of dressing it up as something holier.
But I’m asking for something harder too. If the answer is no, keep me from reading it as a verdict on who I am. A closed door isn’t a sentence You’ve passed on my worth. I forget that in about four seconds, so keep reminding me.
Teach me what to do with the hours in between. I’m not good at empty time, Lord. It fills up with worst-case stories and by the afternoon I believe every one of them.
Steady my hands today. Slow my breathing. Let me eat something. Let me sleep tonight. Let me be present for the people in this house instead of somewhere else in my own head.
Go ahead of me into the rooms I can’t see into. Where people are deciding, be there. Where I have no influence at all, You do.
And if the answer has already been decided, Lord, and it’s only me who doesn’t know yet, then let me be someone who waits well. Not stoic. Not fake. Just held.
I don’t need to know the ending this afternoon. I need to get through this afternoon. That’s all I’m asking for.
You have never once been late. I don’t always feel that. Feeling it was never the requirement.
And while I wait, hold me. Not the outcome. Me.
Amen.
A Scripture to Pray Alongside This
“For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.” (Psalm 75:6-7)
Read it on Bible Gateway. The psalmist rules out every direction on the compass before naming the source. Promotion, the open door and the answer you are waiting on do not finally come from a panel, a hiring manager or a committee. They are handed out by God, through those people.
That does not make the people irrelevant. It means they are not the last word, and the outcome is not being decided somewhere God cannot reach.
How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day
Do not put your life on hold until the reply comes. Waiting for news has a way of swallowing whole weeks, and the days you spend refreshing an inbox are days you do not get back. Keep working, keep your commitments, and let the answer find you living.
Guard against reading rejection into silence. Most delays are administrative rather than personal. Someone is on leave, a process is slower than promised, a decision is waiting on someone else entirely. Proverbs 3:5-6 asks you to lean away from your own understanding precisely because your understanding fills gaps with fear.
Settle the harder question in advance. Decide now what you will believe about God if the answer is no. If your confidence in Him depends on this outcome, the waiting will be unbearable and the refusal will be devastating.
Short Prayers While You Wait for an Answer
Each morning until you hear: Father, I place this decision in Your hands, and I trust You to open the right door and close the wrong one, in Jesus’ name.
When you check your messages again: Lord, steady my heart, take my mind off the waiting, and help me work faithfully today, in the name of Jesus.
When fear says it will be a no: I refuse every anxious thought about an outcome that has not happened, and I rest in the God who lifts up and puts down, in Jesus’ name.
Over the people deciding: Father, give wisdom to everyone weighing this decision, let them see clearly, and let Your purpose for my life be done through them, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Whatever the answer is: Lord, if this door opens, prepare me to walk through it well, and if it closes, hold my heart, keep me from bitterness, and lead me to what You have actually appointed for me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
A Question to Sit With Today
What have you quietly told yourself this answer will prove about you, and is that a weight this decision was ever meant to carry?
Today’s verse walks the same road: 1 Samuel 16:7, God isn’t looking at what they’re looking at.
