Father, I have been carrying it alone.
Not on purpose. It just happened that way. Someone asked how I was doing and I said fine, and the word was out of my mouth before I even checked whether it was true.
You know what sits underneath the fine. You have known all week.
Lord, I am tired in a way sleep has not fixed. I keep going because going is the thing I know how to do. Stopping feels like it would cost me something I cannot afford right now.
So I am stopping here. Just for a minute. With You.
I am not asking You to take the whole weight yet. I am asking You to take the part I have been pretending is not there. The worry I keep folding up small. The thing I have not said out loud to anyone.
You told me to cast it on You. Not to explain it well. Not to have it sorted first. Just to cast it. So here it is, Lord. The unsorted version. The one I would be embarrassed to hand anybody else.
Teach me to let someone in this week. One person. Give me the nerve to answer the question honestly the next time somebody asks.
And when I pick the weight back up, because I probably will, remind me faster. Do not let me get all the way to Friday before I remember You were offering to hold it on Monday.
And Lord, while I am here: the people around me are carrying things too. I have been so busy holding my own that I stopped noticing theirs. Open my eyes to the one person near me who is also saying fine and also not meaning it. Let me be the one who asks twice.
I trust You with what I cannot fix. I trust You with what I have not named.
Thank You for not being tired of me.
Amen.
A Scripture to Pray Alongside This
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
Read it on Bible Gateway. Paul frames shared burdens as obedience rather than as a favour you may request if things get bad enough. When you refuse all help, you are not being strong. You are quietly removing other believers from an instruction God gave them.
The invitation in Matthew 11:28 runs the same way. Jesus does not tell the heavy laden to try harder. He tells them to come, and He offers a yoke, which is a piece of equipment built for two.
How to Carry This Prayer Through Your Day
Name what you have been carrying alone, on paper, in plain words. Burdens kept unnamed grow in the dark and start to feel like your identity rather than your circumstances. Written down, most of them turn out to be specific, finite and shareable.
Then tell one person one true thing. Not everything, and not everyone. One person, one honest sentence, this week. The instinct to wait until you are less of a mess is exactly backwards, and it is usually the thing keeping you isolated.
Ask yourself who taught you that needing help was unsafe. Many people carrying everything alone learned it young, in a home where nobody came when they asked. That is worth bringing to God directly, because He is not the source of it and He does not require it of you.
Distinguish the load you are meant to carry from the one you took on uninvited. Paul tells the same church a few verses later that each will bear his own load, so this is not a call to hand off every responsibility. It is a call to stop carrying other people’s outcomes, other people’s moods, and burdens God never assigned to you in the first place.
Short Prayers for the Weight You Have Been Holding
When you realise how long it has been: Father, I cast this burden onto You, and I refuse to pick it back up again today, in Jesus’ name.
When you want to say you are fine: Lord, give me the courage to tell the truth to someone who can help, and break the pride that keeps me silent, in the name of Jesus.
When you feel forgotten: I reject every lie that says nobody cares and nobody would come, and I declare that God sees me and has not left me alone, in Jesus’ name.
Over the people around you: Father, send me one person I can trust, and make me that person for someone else who is carrying too much, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Before you sleep: Lord, I hand You everything I have been holding by myself, I thank You that You care for me, and I rest tonight knowing You are carrying what I laid down, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
A Question to Sit With Today
Who would come if you actually asked, and what has stopped you from asking them until now?
Today’s verse sits right on top of this prayer. Read the reflection on Psalm 55:22.
