Cast is not a gentle word. It is what you do with a fishing line. You wind up and you throw the thing as far out from yourself as your arm will send it. David did not write take a moment to reflect on your cares. He wrote throw them.
And notice he does not say the shaking stops. He says you will not be shaken. There is a difference. The ground can still move. The diagnosis can still be what it is. The bank balance can still be the number you keep refreshing. Sustained does not mean untouched. It means held.
David wrote this while people he trusted were turning on him. Read the verses just above it and you find a man describing betrayal by a friend he used to walk to the house of God with. So this is not advice from someone whose week went smoothly. It is a man who had every reason to be shaken telling you where he put the weight.
Here is the part that catches most of us. We treat casting as a one-time transaction. We hand it over on Sunday and quietly take it back by Tuesday afternoon. That is normal. It is also why the verb is present tense. Cast. Keep casting. Every time your hands close around it again, open them again.
You do not have to feel lighter for it to have worked. Feelings lag behind obedience, sometimes by days. You throw it out there, and you go make dinner, and somewhere in the ordinary of the evening you notice you are still standing.
What This Verse Means
Psalm 55 is not a general psalm about stress. David is describing betrayal by someone close. He says plainly that it is not an enemy who taunts him, because he could have borne that. It is a companion, a familiar friend, someone he used to walk to the house of God with.
That is the burden he tells you to cast. Knowing this changes the verse. It is not advice for a busy week. It is what David reached for when the person he trusted turned, and when the weight of it made him wish for wings so he could fly away and be at rest.
The word for cast is forceful, the same action as throwing a load off a shoulder. And the promise attached is sustain, which is not the same as remove. God does not promise the situation disappears. He promises to hold you up inside it, and that you will not finally be shaken loose.
The Verse in Other Translations
NIV: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Cares broadens it slightly, taking in the anxious turning over of a thing as well as its weight.
KJV: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” Suffer here means permit, and the promise is that God will not allow it.
NLT: “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” Slip and fall is a physical picture, which fits a psalm written by a man who felt his footing going.
How to Live This Out Today
Be specific about what you are casting. A vague sense of heaviness is hard to hand over. Name the person, the situation and the fear, and give God those.
Expect to do it more than once. Most burdens come back to your shoulder within the hour. Casting it again is not failure, it is the practice.
Do not confuse sustaining with rescuing. The promise is that you will be held, and God very often holds people inside a situation for a long time before He changes it.
If the burden is betrayal, let yourself say so honestly. David did not rush past the anger to get to the trust. He named exactly who had hurt him, and only then did he cast it.

Questions to Reflect On
What exactly is the burden you are carrying, named in one honest sentence?
What would it look like to be sustained in this rather than delivered out of it, and could you accept that from God?
Pray it: Lord, I am throwing this to You instead of turning it over one more time. Sustain me today, even if nothing about my situation changes by tonight.
If your hands are already closing around it again, that is not failure. That is just the next time to cast. Go again.
