What did Jesus say about self-control?
He rarely used the word, and aimed further back than behaviour. In Matthew 5 he moves the line from murder back to contempt and from adultery back to the look, so the fight starts earlier than most of us start fighting. He answered forty days of temptation with Scripture rather than willpower in Luke 4. In Gethsemane he told his friends to watch and pray, then added that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. That is not a rebuke. It is a description, and it is kind.
How to develop self-control biblically?
Start where Scripture is clearest: self-control is fruit of the Spirit, so it grows out of a relationship rather than out of effort. In practice: stay close to God on ordinary days and not only emergency ones, cut off supply before the craving arrives, tell one trustworthy person the truth, and get up quickly after a fall instead of disappearing for a fortnight.
