“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7
Paul wrote this from a prison cell. That is worth knowing before you read it again. It is not a slogan from a man having a good year. It is an old prisoner writing to a younger man who looked like he was about to quit.
Timothy was timid. Paul says so plainly a few lines later. He was young, he was unwell often enough that Paul mentions it, and the church he was leading was hard work. So Paul does not tell him to try harder. He tells him what he already has.
Notice the tense. Not “God will give you.” God has not given you a spirit of fear. It was already handed over, already settled. Whatever is shaking in you this morning, it did not come from Him, and it is not the last word on you.
Then three things. Power. Love. A sound mind. That last one is closer to self-discipline than to sanity, a mind that stays under control instead of running the room. If you have ever watched your own thoughts spiral at two in the morning and felt helpless inside your own head, that phrase was written for you.
Here is the part that is easy to miss. Self-control turns up in this verse as something given, not something earned. Same as in Galatians 5:22-23, where it is listed as fruit of the Spirit rather than a personal achievement. You do not grit your way into it. You receive it, and then you cooperate with it.
So today, when the fear rises or the old habit calls your name, you can answer it with something true. This is not from God. And what is from God is already in me.
What This Verse Means
This comes from the last letter Paul wrote. He is in a Roman prison, near the end of his life, writing to Timothy, a younger leader who appears to be losing his nerve. In the verse immediately before, Paul tells him to fan into flame the gift of God that is in him. Then he explains why that is possible.
The sentence is diagnostic. Paul does not tell Timothy that fear is unusual or shameful. He tells him where it did not come from. Whatever that timidity is, it was not issued by God, which means it does not have the authority it is claiming.
Then he names what was given instead, and the three sit together deliberately. Power without love turns harsh. Love without self-control collapses into sentiment. Self-control without power is only gritted teeth. Together they describe a person who can act, care and hold steady at the same time.
The Verse in Other Translations
NIV: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Making the Spirit the subject clarifies that this is not a natural temperament you either have or lack.
KJV: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” A sound mind is a mind that is working properly, which is a striking way to describe the opposite of fear.
NLT: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Pairing fear with timidity captures the shrinking that fear produces, not just the feeling.
How to Live This Out Today
Name the fear rather than obeying it. Fear works best unexamined. Written down in a sentence, most fears turn out to be specific and considerably smaller than the dread they generate.
Do the small thing you have been avoiding. Courage is built by action taken while still afraid, not by waiting for the fear to lift first.
Check which of the three you are missing. If you are harsh, you are short on love. If you are anxious and scattered, you are short on the sound mind. Ask for the specific one.
Take this alongside proper care, not instead of it. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, your body or your work, speak to a doctor. Scripture and good medical care are not competitors.

A Prayer Based on 2 Timothy 1:7
Father, I reject every spirit of fear that has been operating in my life, because You did not give it to me.
I receive the power, the love and the sound mind that You have given me, in Jesus’ name.
Every spirit of timidity that has made me shrink back from what You called me to do, be broken by the authority of Christ, in the name of Jesus.
Steady my mind where it has been racing and quiet my thoughts before You.
Fill me with love that is not anxious and courage that does not depend on my circumstances.
Lord, fan into flame the gift You placed in me, and let me walk in boldness, compassion and clarity from today, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Pray it: Father, I have been carrying fear like it belonged to me. It is not Yours and I do not want it. Give me Your power where I am weak today, Your love where I have gone hard, and a mind that stays steady when everything in me wants to spiral. Amen.
